The Regulatory Authority expressed concern over what it called recent cases of disinformation prevalent in the industry.

Spokesman of NCAA, Mr. Sam Adurogboye in a statement on Sunday disclosed that the authority recently carried out safety audit of Arik Air and there was no safety issue discovered.

The NCAA's clarification came on the heels of recent rumour making the round that members of the public should avoid flying Arik Airline over non-maintenance of their aircraft.

The airline had dismissed the report, saying it was the handiwork of mischief maker and a pilot of the airline who was sacked for misconduct.

But the NCAA added its voice yesterday urging members of the public to discountenance the report.

It said, "It is unfathomable that some questionable sources have been posting and circulating some cruelly fictitious stories about some airlines – insinuating a crash or claiming a particular carrier does not possess aircraft spares to sustain a safe operation using the online platform.

"Such reports should therefore be discountenanced".

According to the authority, all those involved in spreading misinformation about the state of aviation in the country "should promptly desist from this course of action as the consequence is seriously detrimental to the industry, particularly the confidence of the passengers".

The NCAA said, in preparation for the yuletide festivities with its attendant passenger upsurge both on the domestic and international routes, its Safety Inspectors had embarked on increased surveillance on Airline operations.

The inspectors had also "diligently carried out" daily Ramp inspection to ensure no airline cuts corners, the statement said

On the issue of insurance, the authority said contrary to some claims, it is inconceivable for any carrier/flight crew to carry out any flight operation (private or commercial) without valid or all requisite safety certificates.

According to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (NCARs), 18.11.2 No person shall operate any aircraft in public air transport category without adequate and valid insurance.

On this strength, the Authority will continue to statutorily provide robust regulation for safe and secure airline operations.

The authority also appealed to passengers to show understanding and not take laws into their hands "when it becomes inevitable that flight has to be delayed or cancelled on account of unfavourable weather conditions or any other operational issues such as unavailability of fuel whenever it arises".
