Emirates flight to Maldives from Dubai makes emergency Mumbai landing

An aircraft operated by Dubai’s Emirates headed to Maldives from Dubai made an emergency landing in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon after smoke was detected in the cockpit and cabin, Indian media outlets have reported.

The plane reportedly had 309 people on board.

All the passengers and crew were evacuated soon after landing and are reported to be safe.

An airline spokesperson said: “Emirates can confirm that on July 26 2016, flight EK652 from Dubai to Male was diverted to Mumbai due to a technical fault. The aircraft landed and passengers safely disembarked.

“Emirates apologises for the inconvenience. The well-being and safety of our crew and passengers is of paramount importance.”

Flight EK652, operated by a Boeing 777 aircraft, was scheduled to depart from Dubai at 9.50am but was delayed to 10.26am, according to flight tracking website flightradar24.com.

According to Indian media reports, the Mumbai coastguard had ships on stand-by at sea after the pilot sent an SOS to Air Traffic Controllers.
