Body found at crash site confirmed to be Salem pilot

The plane that was piloted by a Salem man who was reported missing Wednesday was found Friday in Carroll County.

Willard Olds took off around 3 p.m. from the Salem Air Park on Sunday in a 1986 Skylane plane. His body was discovered around 9:45 a.m. in Mechanicstown, about 30 miles from Salem.

“He was deceased in the plane. We contacted the FAA (Federal Aviation Association), and they are now here doing their investigation,” said Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. William Bower.

Olds took off from Salem Air Park on Sunday afternoon and hadn’t been seen since. He was reported missing Wednesday.

The Federal Aviation Association said Olds did not file a flight plan nor was there a record of his landing at another airport. Goshen Police, who were called Wednesday to investigate the 83-year-old’s disappearance, said his flight plan and personal items were left in his vehicle at the hangar.

On Friday, Olds’ body was taken away in an ambulance.

There was one survivor of the crash, though — Old’s poodle named Killer, who never left his owner’s side after the plane came down. Killer was taken to a veterinarian for treatment.

Olds has no family in the area, but a friend came to the scene to pay her respects. Myrtle Slough talked to WKBN about her friend.

“He’d call me, always checking on me. I’d call him, always checking on him, because we were both by ourselves,” she said.

Slough said she will miss Olds.

“He was spunky, hard-headed. Very hard-headed,” she said. “But a lot of fun and a beautiful dancer.”

Slough said this was not the first time that Olds flew to Carroll County. He often flew there to have breakfast at the Carroll County Airport, she said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. The FAA plans to continue its investigation overnight.
