United Airlines will discontinue flights to and from Nigeria beginning on June 30, 2016.
The American airline’s last flights to Nigeria will depart on June 29 from Houston and June 30 from Lagos.
While United has not yet formally announced the suspension of flights, the company’s official Twitter page confirmed the rumor in response to a Nigerian individual’s tweet inquiring about the development.
According to the Twitter exchange, the airline is suspending its flights to and from Nigeria due to a lack of demand.
SaharaReporters reached out to the Nigerian citizen who revealed the development. According to him, he saw a Facebook post saying that United Airlines will discontinue its flights to and from Nigeria. He then contacted United Airlines to verify the rumor.
He told SaharaReporters that United Airlines’ suspension of flights reflects the poor state of the Nigerian economy, adding that while he never flew with United, he had heard mostly negative reviews about the airline.
