Advertising plane crashes after running out of fuel at Detroit fireworks

A plane towing an advertising banner as large crowds gathered near the Detroit River for the annual fireworks Monday ran out of fuel and crashed in the street, Detroit Police Officer Shonda Williams confirmed.

Williams said the plane came down near Shoemaker and Cooper on the city's east side, less than two miles from Coleman A. Young International Airport.

The crash site was about five miles from Hart Plaza, the epicenter of the fireworks gathering in downtown Detroit.

"A small banner plane ran out of fuel and had to make an emergency landing; it struck an electrical line," Williams said. There was an individual that was in the area that suffered injuries as a result and the pilot was also hospitalized."

WJBK-TV, Fox 2 News reports the bystander was injured while trying to exit her car after a power line fell onto her vehicle and is in serious condition.

The plane was a Cessna operated by Air America Aerial Ads in Ohio and piloted by an 18-year-old man, according to Fox 2.
