U.S. Carriers Collect $975 Million In Bag Fees

U.S. airlines collected nearly $975 million in baggage fees in the first quarter of 2016, a gain of more than $100 million from the same period last year.

The carriers also collected more than $745 million in reservation change or cancellation fees in the same quarter. These gains are on top of the record-level $3.8 billion in bag fees and $3 billion in reservation cancellation or change fees that the airlines collected in 2015.

"Airline baggage fee collections are growing as high as the sun in today's summer solstice sky, and yet the carriers continue to oppose a modest increase in the PFC that would allow airports to better accommodate the record number of passengers crowding into checkpoints and other facilities," AAAE President and CEO Todd Hauptli said. "It's time for Congress to see past airline rhetoric and pass a comprehensive FAA reauthorization bill that prioritizes airport infrastructure investment."
