A German seat manufacturer has designed a premium aeroplane suite with an airbag to protect passengers in the event of a crash.
The airbag would deploy from a hidden compartment next to the in-flight entertainment screen to prevent first or business class passengers from slamming face first into the console.
It would minimise injuries in a crash where the plane wouldn’t be completely destroyed upon impact.
The airbag was designed by Stuttgart-based Recaro, although it has not been tied to a specific client.
Its past aircraft clients include Air France, Australian flag carrier Qantas, and US low-cost airline JetBlue.
In a patent filing, Recaro claimed the risk of injury in a crash would be ‘advantageously’ reduced with an airbag.
The bag would be deployed in a ‘triggering event’ such as a crash landing
Drawings show a wide airbag designed to absorb the impact of the passenger’s head and shoulders when it’s fully inflated.
The patent filing stated: ‘The airbag comprises two distinct zones, one with a smaller thickness in the head part and more thickness in the shoulder portion.’
MailOnline Travel has contacted Recaro for comment.
In addition to designing aircraft seats, Recaro has manufactured car seats for Aston Martin, Ferrari and Lamborghini, and football club dugout seats for Manchester United and Real Madrid.
