Air India to Lease 14 Airbus A320neo

During the opening day of the India Aviation airshow in Hyderabad, Air India has signed an agreement with leasing firm ALAFCO for 14 Airbus A320neo.

In a press statement, ALAFCO said that the aircraft will be leased for a period of 12 years, with the first six jetliners scheduled for delivery in 2017, six in 2018 and the last two airframes in 2019.

These aircraft come from major orders placed by the Kuwait-based international aircraft leasing company in 2011 for 50 aircraft, and in 2012 for an additional 35, bringing its total backlog for the type to 85.

Air India is today the largest airline in the country, currently operating a fleet of over 100 aircraft. Of these, 68 belong to the Airbus A320 family aircraft (22 A319s, 26 A320s and 20 A321s). The carrier has a long-standing tradition as A320 operator as it was the first airline in India to operate the type almost three decades ago.

The A320neo is also taking a main role at the India Aviation airshow. The first IndiGo’s A320neo made an appearance in front of Indian Government officials, IndiGo and Airbus executives as well as those who attended the show. The aircraft was delivered the last week after a direct flight from Toulouse to Delhi International Airport.

IndiGo, India’s largest airline by passenger numbers is Airbus’ biggest A320neo customer having ordered a total of 430 aircraft placed in 2011 and 2015.
