Prince William is shrugging off recent criticism about his work ethic.
The royal dad of two’s schedule came under scrutiny after it was revealed that he carries out about 20 hours of flying time a week with his job as a pilot with the East Anglian Air Ambulance, which is about two-thirds the amount of hours his fellow pilots that work full time put in, PEOPLE has confirmed.
The royal’s job with the service is his primary role, and he fits in charity commitments and royal engagements around it.
With one newspaper columnist calling himwork-shy, reports have also highlighted the number of engagements he carried out last year – 122 at home and abroad – which is 128 fewer than his grandfather, Prince Philip, 94.
During an interview with ITV on Tuesday, the royal said criticism in the British press "is part of the job."
His civilian job as a pilot also enables him andPrincess Kate to base much of their family life at the 10-bedroom Anmer Hall mansion on Sandringham estate in Norfolk. Prince Georgealso attends preschool nearby.
The prince’s response comes during an important week for the royal. On Tuesday, William unveiled a groundbreaking joint agreement by transport companies and ports to help crackdown on the trafficking of wildlife parts.
"If we allow current trends to continue, there will be no African elephants or rhinos left in the wild by the time my daughter Charlotte reaches her 25th birthday," he said during a stirring speech at Buckingham Palace. "The poaching crisis is bringing violence, death and corruption to many vulnerable communities. It threatens to rob future generations of their livelihoods in those regions where wildlife tourism is the core of local economies."
