Regina woman charged after allegedly smoking on flight, refusing to put cat in kennel

A 30-year-old Regina woman is facing charges under federal aviation law after police say she was caught smoking a cigarette on an airplane during a flight.

The incident allegedly occurred on a flight from Toronto to Regina on Jan. 6. Police say a female passenger refused to secure her pet cat in its kennel after crew members repeatedly told her to do so.

It’s also alleged that she locked herself inside a washroom on the aircraft and smoked a cigarette, risking the safety of the 116 passengers and crew aboard the flight.

Leandra Lynn Newman has been charged under the Canadian Aviation Regulations with smoking in an aircraft lavatory and failing to comply with instructions given by cabin crew.

Newman is scheduled to appear in Regina provincial court April 13.
