Tiger Airways flight from Brisbane in landing emergency at Melbourne Airport

A mystery odour on board a Tiger Airways flight has been blamed for sparking an emergency response at Melbourne Airport.

The pilot of Melbourne-bound flight TT511 from Brisbane reported an unusual odour shortly before 10am.

Firefighters and ambulance paramedics were called about 9.50am to reports of smoke in the cabin and met the plane on the tarmac after it landed safely at 10.05am.

A spokeswoman for the airline said "an unusual odour" was detected in the cabin on descent. She said no smoke was visible on the plane.

"Emergency services were on standby to meet the aircraft in Melbourne, which is standard for an event of this nature," she said.

"Safety is always the airline's first priority and the airline has robust procedures in place to ensure the highest standards of safety are always maintained."

The plane would be assessed by engineers in Melbourne, the spokeswoman said.

About 80 passengers were on board. They all walked off the plane unassisted.

Four cabin crew were assessed by paramedics at the scene, but did not need hospital treatment.

A press conference with Tiger chief executive Rob Sharp about the airline's five-year sponsorship deal with NRL club Melbourne Storm was delayed by 45 minutes on Tuesday morning due to the incident.
