2 dead in small plane crash off Destin coast Thursday night

Two bodies were recovered during a search on and off the coast of Destin, Fla., Thursday night after witnesses reported a plane crashing into the water offshore, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

FOX10 News is told the victims are a man and a woman. No one else is believed to have been on board. The plane was registered in Texas.

The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the crash.

The OCSO had reported a small plane was overdue at Destin Airport. Debris from a Piper Archer aircraft was subsequently found. Investigators say the plane crashed just before 7 p.m.

The OCSO, Walton County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Coast Guard, area firefighters and others searched along the beaches and along the coast. Searchers found debris and other items scattered along the coast from the area between Henderson Beach and the Walton County Line.

A Coast Guard news release late Thursday night said watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a report that a single-engine aircraft crashed into the water about a half mile off Henderson Beach.

The Coast Guard reports a 45-foot USCG response boat was launched from Coast Guard Station Destin to take part in the search, as well as a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter that took off from Air Station New Orleans.
