Mumbai university to buy aircraft for BSc Aviation course

The news that Mumbai University will buy an aircraft may surprise one and all. But once the reason is specified the astonishment will fade right away.

Yes Mumbai University will buy an aircraft this year as they are starting an under-graduate course BSc Aviation from this session in their own campus. The university will need the aircraft to train the students who will enrol for the BSc Aviation and commercial pilot training courses from the next session.
The new course in line with the Central Government’s Skill-India Campaign will be inaugurated in the 2016-17 academic session at the Garware Institute of Career Education and Development at Kalina. The course will be conducted in collaboration with the Bombay Flying Club (BFC).

The management council of the university convened a meeting on Tuesday to finalise the decision to purchase the aircraft for the sake of the students, but the minor details regarding the matter are yet to be worked out. According to the deputy registrar of the famed university, Leeladhar Bansod, the course will be in alignment with the Narendra Modi-led NDA government’s Skill India Mission.

It is learnt that the plan to buy an aircraft was first mooted seven years ago in 2009 for the Ratnagiri sub-campus, but it remained on paper as there were several permissions that needed to be taken which was a lengthy process. Roughly around 60-120 students will be registered for the course ensuing in the next academic session.

According to information available, the aircraft could be a four-seater Cessna 172 which will incur a cost of around 1.5 crore and that needed several rounds of talks between university officials and the club regarding the matter. The aircarft is likely to be stationed at Juhu aerodrome and will share space with the BFC.

It has been decided that the course will take off in 2016-17 academic session but the fee structure, seats and other details need to be worked out in the months to come. The university had the BSc aviation course on roster since last 14 years, but that was being conducted by separate institute.
